Tax season is here. We would like to inform you about a new, simplified way to file your 2024 state and federal income taxes securely and for free online through the IRS Direct File program. Direct File is open and available to more than one third of taxpayers in North Carolina filing their 2024 income tax returns.

Direct File is a free program that allows you to easily file your federal and North Carolina state tax returns online from your mobile device or computer.

How Does it Work?

  1. Confirm your eligibility using the IRS eligibility checker at directfile.irs.gov.
  2. File your federal tax return using IRS Direct File.
  3. Once you have completed your federal tax return, you will be directed to the FileYourStateTaxes page. This is where you will file your North Carolina state tax return.

Who is Direct File for?

Direct File is available to North Carolina taxpayers who:

  • Lived in North Carolina for the entire year
  • Earned all their income in North Carolina
  • Claim the North Carolina standard deduction amount
  • Claim common North Carolina deductions like the child deduction

Direct File eligibility is determined by the IRS and supports taxpayers who claim:

  • Common sources of income (W-2 wages, interest, social security payments, and unemployment benefits)
  • The federal standard deduction amount
  • Common federal tax credits (Earned Income Tax Credit, Child Tax Credit, Premium Tax Credit, Child and Dependent Care Credit)
